Avoid Exit Interviews with “Stay” Interviews

Learning what makes your star employees stay with the company is critical for future retention. We are all familiar with the concept of exit interviews. But why not avoid that interview (and the pain of recruiting, interviewing, and training new employees) by investing a small amount of time building rapport with existing employees? Welcome to the concept of the “stay” interview.

Managers conduct “stay” interviews individually with their star employees. The interview enables managers to learn what uniquely matters to, and motivates, each of their top performers. The goal is to make a “stay” interview feel like a positive conversation (not a complaint session) and to create a mutual “stay” plan to retain the employee.

Sample questions may include:

  • When you come to work each day, what do you look forward to most?
  • How does working here compare to what you thought it would be like?
  • Have you ever thought about leaving our team?
  • What do you want to learn here?
