Last month, we hosted an Accelerent breakfast event, featuring NFL star and ESPN analyst Merril Hoge. To kick off the event, our own Kelly Roy (VP of Business Development) and Tena Mayberry (CEO and President) presented the anticipated changes to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)to an audience of over 300 people, mostly business owners and decision-makers. Kelly and Tena’s presentation was appropriately titled,"Don't Shoot the Messenger," and they even brought along bullet-proof vests, just in case! Since the event, the final FLSA changes have been announced. You can check out our blog post, New FLSA Regulations Effective December 1, 2016, which outlines these changes and how you can prepare.

After Kelly and Tena were finished, Merril Hoge began his presentation. Merril explained that ever since he was eight years old, he dreamed of being a professional football player. Growing up in a small town in Idaho, the goal seemed unrealistic. But Merril didn't just dream about this goal. From that young age, he used a personal mantra – "find a way" – to overcome any obstacle and attain any goal. Today, as he continues to accomplish his own goals, he also uses his “find a way” philosophy as a parenting tool, and challenges his two children, Kori and Beau, to find a way to achieve their goals, overcome obstacles, and take ownership of their lives.

He believes that everyone is capable of excellence and borrowed from the great Aristotle by reminding all in attendance that, "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit."
